post-oscar blog ahead . . .
so i did pretty good last night - 17 out of 24! and i was 7 for 8 of the big 8 - the mistake being that i was sure the soul-less academy would have given best pic to aviator and not a movie that truly deserved it. and i have to say, my faith in the academy has been pleasantly restored! there weren't too mnay surprises overall - it's pretty much went according to expectations - but my favorite category and perhaps the biggest upset was Enternal Sunshine winning for best original screenplay (which of course it was)but i didn't think they'd give charlie kaufman an oscar - even though he deserves 3 at this point (adaptation / being john malkovich - i mean, it's impossible to get an original movie in hollywood these days - but he can do it!) so overall i was pleased. if i could have done anything it would hav ebeen to give the supporting actress award to sophie okenedo from hotel rwanda, half because she deserves it and half because that movie needed to get recognized. but this would have been easier to do had it been nominated for more awards - whatever.
either way - kudos to the academy for ending early and having generally good choices. i don't think i liked all the new ways of giving out the awards though - they already keep the techie awards separate - don't these people deserve to get to go to the stage? or not stand in front of the crowd only to be shunned like rejected miss american contestants!? the only thing it seemed to do was emphasize the fact that movies are run and made by only old white men, preferably balding.
what did you think?
