City Girl at Heart

so i was walking to a friend's office the other day - which involved crossing the street. when i cross a street i don't pay attention to the whole "walk" "don't walk" light - i watch the cars. if there are no cars, i walk, if there are cars i don't. since i obviously don't pay attention to the lights i don't expect cars to either. it's an old habit picked up from being a pedestrian for 5 years on the streets of DC. normally it's not a thing. however, yesterday, after performing the feat of crossing an empty street when the light said "don't walk" i heard a couple behind me commenting that "wow, she must be from around here - we'll follow her" "did you see how she just crossed the street?" i turned around and tried to explain to the couple that's it's just a bad habit and not a big deal - and that no, i wasn't from around here. they smiled and nodded and said, "oh, you're from new york then?"

wow.

you can tell hartford is a car-centric city and not a pedestrian-centric city very easily.

got a thing in the mail wanting me to buy some thing or another - i only mention it because they sent me one of those business reply post cards and wanted me to send it back with my credit card number, expiration date, signature, email, and phone all included - on the back of a postcard. with no envelope. right . . .

"What do you call a large?"

at starbucks this morning and this woman ordered a large coffee and was very confused when they started calling it a venti. i found this alarming. are there people out there not up to date on starburcks coffee sizes? i thought that was one of those things that us americans had pretty much figured out. or i live a way too commerical life.

New York New York

On Saturday morning Ivy and I drove down the beautiful merrit turnpike to new york city. after crossing town only twice to figure out where we were going we ditched the car, took a cab to mete up with ivy's friends, and proceeded to grab a slice and walk around that wonderful city for a few hours - including some shopping which resulted in a fabulous new pair of black boots for myself. each time i got to new york i am more and more convinced i will eventually have to spend part of my life there. although, i do think it might be nice to spend my time there being wealthy and living in a fabulous loft apartment. so that's a new life goal.

we went out for dinner and drinks and ended the night with some of the most amazing pizza i've ever had. i miss getting dressed up for the evening.

as fabulous as sat night was, sun morning was just brutal. woke up at 7am and dragged self from couch that i had crashed on. driving back to connecticut after such a great night and remembering how wonderful it is to live in a city is hard enough, but driving back at 7am after 3 hours of sleep is even worse. but i got my first experience driving in new york city and have decided that sense 1 -i did not kill anyone and 2- managed to find my way onto the correct freeway, i am a rockstar.

exactly one month till fiji.
